The Bible speaks of our responsibility as Christians for the poor, oppressed, orphans and widows. Most of us don't realize how passionately God cares for those who are hurting and oppressed. Psalm 140.12: I know that you, GOD, are on the side of victims, that you care for the rights of the poor. (Message Bible)

What does it take to be the selfless, loving Christian we desire to be? What is needed to move us beyond selfish, fleshly pursuits to deeds of loving service to God and others? We must "lift up our eyes and look on the fields." We must look beyond ourselves. Ecclesiastes 4:1: Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed-- and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors-- and they have no comforter. (NIV) We must "learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow" (Isaiah 1:17, NIV)
